Going on a daring climb is something most climbers are dreaming of. And it’s easy to see why, it’s very exciting, engaging and it certainly encourages you to push the limits in a way that’s interesting and fun. But that doesn’t mean something like this is free of any dangers. As we know, going on a climb is something that can sometimes lead to catastrophes, as you never really have an idea of what exactly can expect. Weather changes can appear out of nowhere, and even your equipment can malfunction. That’s what happened to John Pierce.

John is from Maryland and he’s always been a solo climber. While he enjoys practicing with others, he mastered the art of solo climbing. But during one of his expeditions in Nepal, he was very close to losing his life due to a minor mistake. Since he was always using great equipment, he thought he was safe, yet for some reason he forgot adjusting the oxygen levels.

Going on a Nepalese expedition is certainly more difficult when compared to a lower-altitude adventure. So because of that, John ended up without breath and he lost consciousness slowly. He had no idea what he could do, and during that time he remembered of a friend that traveled often and which would have some knowledge about and connections within this region.

As he was close to the last breath, he sent that friend a text, telling her that he is without breath and that he is slowly losing it. He got very lucky, because right after sending the text, he passed out and the chances of someone finding him would be zero.

Thankfully, his friend received the message and she knew exactly what she would need to do. She talked with the local authorities despite being overseas herself. Thanks to her, a Medevac helicopter was dispatched and John was taken to the nearby hospital.

The thing we need to learn from this entire experience is that your saving grace can arise from anywhere. You always want to have a plan B, and maintaining connections with friends within your niche can help. John was lucky here, because without any way to connect with others, he wouldn’t be alive anymore. Always ensure that if you are undertaking such an adventure, you focus on getting the best equipment and always test everything. Also, telling others where you are and checking in with them regularly can help too, since whenever anything goes wrong, they will be there for you!
